Free Guide to Keeping Your Money Safe on Your Summer Vacation

Summer vacation season is here! Whether you’re going on a family beach vacation or planning a solo backpacking trip, it’s important to know how to stay financially protected while traveling. Like reviewing the best places to visit when exploring your destination, here is a list of ways to keep you and your money safe while on vacation.

Submit A Travel Notification

Before you leave on your trip, make sure to reach out to your financial institution to let them know you will be gone. This will reduce the likelihood of your cards being flagged for suspicious activity when used in different locations.

With Credit Union of Denver’s new Digital Banking platform you can easily submit a travel notice under ‘Card Management’. Simply enter you travel dates and destination(s).

Have A RFID-Blocking Wallet

While you need to be cautious of pit-pocketers, they can also steal digital credit card information via radio-frequency identification skimmers. Protect against both kinds of theft with an RFID-blocking travel wallet that can be tucked into your waistband or under your shirt.

Download The Mobile Banking App

When you are on the go, the last thing you want to have to do is find a computer or call into the bank for balance and transaction inquiries.  Having the Credit Union of Denver app on your phone allows you to track your account 24/7. Wherever you are, you can transfer funds, pay bills, check balances, report stolen cards, and more.

 Create Account Alerts

Set up account alerts that let you know when certain transactions come through on your account.  While on vacation, it is easy to let things slide regarding money management. So your alerts can help you stay on track and alert you to any potentially fraudulent activity as soon as possible.

Avoid Public or Unsecured Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi that is not secured by a password is open for anyone to be able to access your device and track your activity. Be cautious of networks that are password-protected but that anyone can get the password to, like hotels. Always remain on your cell phone data plan if possible.

Watch Out for Card Skimmers

Popular vacation spots can be easy targets for criminals who want to steal your personal information. If you must use an ATM while on vacation, try to use one that’s inside of a financial institution or other building. Criminals have a harder time installing skimmers with people and cameras watching. If you’re getting gas and need to use your card, check the card slot for any signs of tampering. Use tap-to-pay or your mobile wallet instead of your physical card for an added layer of security.

Report Lost or Stolen Cards Immediately

If you do happen to lose your debit or credit card(s), please ‘lock’ the card and report it lost/stolen within the mobile app right away. You can also request a new card directly within the app. Or if you prefer, call in and notify us right away.

Carry Some Cash as A Backup

We have tools available to make banking while on vacation seamless and convenient, but it’s also a good idea to have some cash with you. Whatever amount of cash you’re comfortable carrying on you to cover potential purchases. Plan to have multiple forms of payment, if something does happen to one, you won’t be left in the lurch and will have a backup.

Summer vacations can mean new places to experience, new flavors to try, and new memories to create. Having your finances compromised while on your trip could bring all of that to a halt. With a little bit of planning and extra steps to protect your funds, you have a fun and safe vacation this summer.
